Week 2, Day 0

Today was a very frustrating day, not gonna lie. We had our wonderful neighbors babysit the kids, and she even took them at 7:30 am! (Can you believe I even woke up that early???) We were really hoping to be super productive since we didn't have the kids. Well, the day did not start off well. We were a little late getting to the house, so we worried that the HVAC man had come but saw we weren't there so he left, because he was late. We forgot to ask some friends on Sunday to borrow their circular saw, so we couldn't finish Halle's bead board project. Then the dishwasher that was just installed didn't work. Then there was an incident with Derrick's chop saw that broke a piece to it because of a finicky piece of wood, flinging plastic pieces all through the garage. We were so lucky someone wasn't hurt. Then we got a call from our neighbor saying that Halle would not stop crying, and wouldn't take her paci or bottle. So I had to drive the 20 minutes to get her. I felt so bad for our neighbor because Halle did the exact same thing last time they watched her. She's just going through that mama's girl stage. As soon as I held her she stopped crying instantly and just put her head on my shoulder. She was even smiling before I left after three hours straight of crying. It's nice to feel like the one who can make everything better, like my mom did when we were little. I was glad that Hayden was having so much fun though. I was worried that he would see me and want to come with me, but he was having way too much fun with the kids. He didn't even flinch when I left. So I had to run some errands on the way back to the house and of course they took FOREVER. Why do things always take longer when you are in a hurry? I just felt like this was the day we could get so much done since we started early and we didn't have the kids. It was really frustrating that we kept hitting so many road blocks.

When I got back to the house we just couldn't figure out what to do next. The main things left that need to be done before we move in are Halle's room (which we couldn't finish yet), painting the living areas (which we didn't have time for), and painting the kitchen cabinets (which my paint dried a little so there were flecks of dried paint on my roller that were making the cabinets look horrible). We decided that at least starting to paint the living areas was the way to go, so off I went to buy the paint while Derrick taped. I am using Kilz paint from WalMart, which I have really liked so far. The paint color I picked was a Valspar color, so WalMart matched the color for me. I got four gallons and headed back home. When I opened the can the liquid felt way more thin than any others I have used so far. We tried a little on the wall but knew that it was going to need more than one coat and it made tiny little bubbles. I really thought something was just wrong with the paint because it was so thin. I was unwilling to do two coats on such a huge area (both living rooms and all hallways and the laundry area), and then there was the fact that it cost almost $100 for all the paint I needed. I am not willing to fork our another $100! So we took the paint back to WalMart and asked the paint lady (who has been really helpful to this point) what she thought the problem could be. Well, she got really defensive about her fabulous Kilz product and amazing color matching computer, so that was not very helpful. I think I've just decided to get the Valspar paint since that's the brand of the color I picked. So complicated! (If anyone has any advice on this problem I would appreciate it.)

BAD PAINT!
So after that we went home. Hayden did not want to leave the neighbor's house. And he was eating dinner when we go there, and I watched him eat a whole cup's worth of green beans! My boy who doesn't eat vegetables?!? Wow. He was really sad when he had to come home. We are really going to miss our neighbors.

We couldn't let the day end on a sour note, so after we ate our dinner we had FHE. Since Hayden has been so attention starved from us we decided to take him to this park we found and play with him. It was so nice to just relax and play all together.

There was a point where we had both kids in swings and I said to Derrick, "Whoa! We have two kids now! Can you believe it?" Sometimes it just hits me again that we are parents of two and I sort of get freaked out. How did this happen? Ok, I know how it happened, but how did we get so old? I swear we just got married and were in our little one bedroom apartment without a care in the world except me learning how to cook, and figuring out how to live with a boy. How things change.
After that we went across the street to get some ice cream. We got two little ones for all three of us to share, and Hayden kept stealing them and putting them where we couldn't reach them, as if to say, "This one is mine!" He's so fun to watch now that he's got a mind of his own. At night sometimes he asks for me to go in his room, and when I get there he just talks my ear off about all that he's thinking about. I think he just can't sleep because there are so many things that he's learning that are running through his head. He tells me about how the owls are not outside now (all gone), and how there is no lightning right now (all gone), and how the punch is all gone, and how cars will hurt you if you run in the road, and that he played with Garrison today. After he tells me all that he feels better and can go to sleep. I can't believe how much I love him at those times. What a sweet heart.

And just because writing down all the bad things was pretty depressing, I just have to say today was not all bad. We met some of our new neighbors at the house who seem really nice, and we did get a few odd things done that really did add up, including lots of taping and washing walls, which takes a lot of time. Not to mention how blessed we feel to have each other and to be able to have bought our house. We aren't feeling discouraged at all (Well except for when a month worth of Derrick's journals were accidentally deleted. Ouch.). Here's to a more productive day tomorrow!

What a day! Wowza. Days like these make you grateful when things pull off without a hitch. I guess you have to have the very antithesis as well.

I don't know much about paint but I do know something about returning a product you don't like. I say return it...it's Walmart. They have to take it and get what you want. It was less than satisfactory and it is going on your walls which you will see everyday. You don't want to look at those walls and get a blech feeling. I would just go to customer service and start fresh as if you are buying paint for the first time. That is my advice anyway.

Hayden is so sweet to want to tell you all about his day. Won't that be wonderful when he is older and doing the same thing? So sweet.

I TOTALLY know what you mean about having those "whoa, we have two kids" moments. Whenever I point them out Jared or whoever is with us makes fun of me. I am glad I am not the only one who has felt that way. Sometimes time finally stands still long enough for me to soak in how far we have come and it shocks me sometimes.

I think I read every word detailing all the stuff you're doing for your house. I'm so envious! I wish we were buying a house right now. I LOVE the bright colors! Love! I'm so glad you're not doing taupe or browns like everyone else. Good for you!
