The garden

What a disappointment this year was.
Everything started out great, but it hasn't been doing great lately.  We did get four spaghetti squash, a bunch of beans, a few tiny onions, a few tiny garlic, and about three good early girl tomatoes.  The potatoes all died, which is supposed to happen but I don't think yet.  When I dug up a plant there were two tiny ones.  Tiny.  A friend of mine said the same thing about hers, so sad.  The lettuce was bitter.  My tomatoes had bugs in them and turned rotten, except for my early girls which weren't early at all, and they were tiny. This is the most disappointing part.  I planted 6 tomato plants, and the tomatoes from 5 of them are no good! I tried to be not pick and just try them anyway, but they were black and moldy looking when I cut them. Cucumbers died.  Zucchini and crookneck died, so we replanted, but it's dying again.  Zucchini bolted because it was too hot.  We got a few peas, but then the plants died because it was too hot.  We will plant more when it gets cooler.  The peppers produced two, but they had black spots and went rotten really fast at home.  All our beans got eaten by beetles, even though we sprayed them a few times.  We have no idea if it isn't doing well because of the weather, because of over or under watering, or because of pest or fungi, but we are so sad.  We still have lots of seeds left, but we put money into this thing by renting the plot, buying the fencing, and all the seeds and pesticide, and we are not getting nearly out of it what we put in.

Can you see why I was at first really excited for the tomatoes?  Every plant has loads just like this, and they looked so promising at first.

Oh how sad! :( I need to go check on our garden again, but ours I dont think is doing too well still either. Ours was only the cost of seeds though so its not quite as disappointing I bet.

Erin, I'm so sorry to hear about your garden not doing so well. Mine is the same way. My strawberry plants had tons of blossoms, but mice ate all my berries - all of them. And now birds are pecking at most of my tomatoes and four or five of my twelve plants are dead or dying and I don't know why. half of my peppers died after doing really well all summer and my onions were tiny again. It is really frustrating to put so much time, work and money into something that can be so unpredictable. Wishing you better luck!
*I did learn in my gardening class that lettuce is usually bitter because of underwatering, just FYI*

I am so sorry Erin. That is so terrible. I hope your second planting of peas yields better results. If you research online I have heard of putting coffee grounds in the soil which you can pick up the leftovers from a local coffee shop or something and all sorts of other tricks that may help you nip those pests in the bud.

Oh...and I have heard that the black tomatoes are from a virus. That might help you in your research.
