We finally planted our garden!!

I was so excited that we finally planted our garden tonight! We have been meaning to get to it forever. In fact, we had scheduled it for the Wednesday after Derrick took his last final but it was raining that day and it just kept getting pushed back for one reason or another. It was my turn for the FHE lesson tonight so I called Derrick and told him to bring home a bag of soil after work (he brought home fertilizer instead! haha). I gave a little lesson on the importance of gardening and talked about how President Kimball was always encouraging us to have gardens to be able to rely on ourselves. I also think it teaches hard work. I have absolutely no clue how to plant and take care of a garden, so this is a big learning experience for me. We don't have a lot of ground to plant in since we live in an apartment, but I want to be ready for when we move into a house and I have more land to work with. I want to already know what to do!

Our neighbors Troy and Amy let us use their little spot of ground next to their garage. (Thanks guys!) This is what it looked like a couple of weeks ago so I got to work!

This is what I ended up with that night. What a difference! I love seeing these pictures. It makes me feel like I have done something!
Here is Derrick softening the soil and mixing in the fertilizer.

We planted carrots in the left corner, one yellow squash plant in the back, one zucchini plant in the back, peas up front, green beans on the right side, and some green onions by that metal pole (that doesn't even do anything! no water comes out of it..). The little corner that isn't watered is going to be tomatoes that Amy will plant when she gets her starts. So there it is! Lets hope that our neighbor children won't pick all our plants when they come up.

My flowers are also coming up! I planted bulbs last fall and I was so excited when I saw them poking through the ground. They are pretty tall now. I really wish I could have gotten more in, but our ground was too rocky and Derrick was working two jobs so he didn't really have time to help me. This fall maybe. My grandma always planted tulips and daffodils and so it reminds me of her. Thanks for the bulbs, Liza!

Hayden likes flowers. He was mostly interested in the bush to the right though. It's fun to watch him explore new textures and learn about the world.

Here they are. I don't know if you can tell, but one of them has become a victim of our neighbor children. I realize that this looks awful and needs to be weeded and have the garbage taken out of it, but I am sure I will get to that someday. They also wilted because it was so hot today and I have neglected watering them.

I LOVE IT! Just the whole college life. You totally make due with what you've got. =0) I can't wait until we can get into our house and have a spot for a garden!

That is awesome you put together a garden. We actually just got our first tomatoes of the season (Las Vegas actually has 2 planting seasons). It is so great to have your own veggies to eat!
